VPN stands for Virtual Private Network and they have multiple advantages. I personally lived several years in China, so I couldn’t interact with the West (family and friends) without the use of one. I also couldn’t access knowledge because certain websites (like Wikipedia) are blocked there. It seriously made me reflect on the freedom of access to information and the privilege we have in the globalized north. So if you need a VPN, read on further to see what worked for me.
Why have a VPN
- To access blocked social media;
- To access blocked information on the web;
- To maintain access to your websites when you travel;
- To surf the web without as much tracking (VPNs shield your IP address and protect your privacy and virtual location);
- To keep spying and hacking at a distance;
- But definitely not to gain access to different contents on streaming platforms. That is not ok, shame, shame, shame 🔔
Recommendations
Here are some brands I’ve personally used in China and why I recommend them.
➤ Astrill VPN
- This the first VPN I used
- It was stable at first
- It offers many servers
- Unfortunately it started being a shaky connection
➤ Express VPN
- This became my go to after Astrill
- It was much more stable
- It had a team constantly alert of changes in censorship
- The team is quick at updating and helping its users with issues
- But it was a little expensive
➤ Nord VPN
- I’m currently subscribed to this service
- It is stable
- Has a good range of servers
- After just over a year with Nord, I’ve not had a single issue, it’s been a smooth sail
- It has advantageous rates for students 🧑🎓(check out Unipay if you are a student or use my affiliate link)
- It allows up to 6 devices to connect at once with one account (awesome compared to Astrill and Express, although I don’t know how they’ve improved ever since I left them)
