🍎 Navigating the Multilingual Internet

☞ In this post, I want to invite you to explore options of translators that could improve your overall experience of the world wide web and increase your access to its content.

Hi, it’s Teacher C 👋😊✨

As you might know, I’m a polyglot (I speak French, English, Spanish and Chinese), and I’m planning to write my blog in any and every of those languages.

Of course that comes with a few problems. First, access for you, my audience, to my posts. And second, if I want to give you access, it’s a lot of translation work for me😅.

My solution 👉an automatic translator👈 Many browsers now automatically offer the option of live translating the webpage you are consulting to your preferred language or accept widgets that do the same.

🤩 After reading this post, you’ll be able to look up things like Asian tales and include results written in Chinese, Japanese, Hindu, etc.

Translating tool options

Web Browsers

☞ Some web browsers come with this function already integrated. Finding it should be easy.

  • Safari
    • When you are on a page you want translated
    • Look in the search bar
      • Click the three dotted circle icon
      • Select ‘Translate Webpage’
      • Choose your language✨
    • If yours isn’t available
      • In the same menu click ‘preferred language’
      • Modify the parameters to your liking ✨
  • For Edge
    • When you are on a page you want translated
    • Look in the search bar
      • Click the ‘Show Translation Options’ icon
      • Choose your preferred language
      • Click ‘Translate’✨
  • For Google Chrome
    • When you are on a page you want translated
    • Look in the search bar
      • Click the icon that looks like the ‘Google Translate’ icon
      • It should translate to your preferred language ✨
    • You can also right-click anywhere on the page and select ‘Translate to [Language]’✨

Web Extensions

☞ Some web browsers need to have the translating feature added to them. Here I suggest the Google Translate add-on as it’s more widely available and user friendly.

  • Firefox or Mozilla
    • In the Mozilla or Firefox browser: go to the Firefox add-ons page and search for ‘Google Translate’
    • Choose ‘Google Translator for Firefox’
    • Click ‘Install’ and follow the described steps to install the add-on
    • In the search bar, enter the address of the web page you want translated
    • Go to the ‘Translate’ icon with the letter ‘T’ and right-click it
    • Select ‘Translate page with Google Translate’
    • Ta-da 👏👏👏
  • Opera
    • In the Opera browser: click on the menu in the upper left corner
    • Click on ‘Extensions’ and select ‘Get extensions’
    • In the tab ‘Opera Save add-ons’ search for Google Translate
    • Click on ‘Add to Opera’
    • Choose ‘Google Translate add-on’ from the plugin add-ons
    • Voilà 🎉

For Mobile

  • Apple – iPhone
    • Using the Safari browser
      • Find a page to translate
      • Click on the ‘aA’ icon in the search bar
      • In the menu select ‘Translate to [language]’
    • OR
    • After installing the app ‘Microsoft Translator’
      • Open Safari
      • Find a page to translate
      • Click the ‘Share’ button
      • Click ‘more’ until you see the ‘Microsoft Translator’ option
      • Set it to ‘on’
      • Tap ‘Done’
  • For Android
    • Using the Chrome browser
      • Find a page to translate
      • Go to the bottom of the page and click ‘more’ and choose your preferred language
      • Chrome will ask you if you want to translate just this once or to always translate the page
      • Select what you prefer

Google Translate

☞ This one seriously blew my mind. It’s so elegant.

  • Google Translate
    • Open Google Translate on any browser
    • Paste the URL of the webpage you want to translate
    • Choose the language you want to read it in
    • Press enter
    • A new link will be generated, click it and it will bring you to a translated version of the webpage 🤯
  • Bing
    • If you prefer Bing translations, choose this one instead
    • The steps are the same as above
